What is Ram air turbine?? and it's working.

Ram air turbine is only extend whenever there is any emergency situations like both the engines are failure then this RAT extends and play a major role to provide an electricity.

First we have to know is every aircraft has it's  three hydraulic systems and indicated as green, blue yellow it provides the force or energy to move our control surfaces.

Ok, in the aircraft we have different backup to provide a electricity like we have battery, APU and generator but it can deliver a power to whole aircraft for 35min. So the major role of ram air turbine increases.

Ram air turbine actually looks like a-

The rotors of the RAT start rotating because of air velocity and it's push the hydraulic actuators to the upwards directions like-

And this hydraulic shaft passes the speed to the constant speed motor generator(CSMG).
Then it fullfil the need of electricity in flight.
But the power provided by the ram air turbine is actually 1/18 of the original power.

Means- RAT= 5 kva
Where the engines provides= 90kva.
because of this low energy supply generally we cannot operate the most electronics system like in-flight entertainment system cabin lightening and Major impact is we have switch off some cockpit instrument also.
This ram air turbine can not deployed by itself we have deployed by cockpit button like this-

We have switched it by manually.
Now let's talk about the different locations of this ram air turbine on different aircrafts.

This image is from the Airbus a380 aircraft the ram air turbine located at the left wing near to the flaps. because to provide streamlined flow to the blades.

And most of the aircraft the ram air turbine located at the rear bottom side of the fuselage like-

Ok, in next blog we are going to discuss why there is generation white foggy type airflow generated Infront of engines.

Till that stay tuned for more.
